What The Heck Is Going On Here, and Who is behind this AGLOCO anyway?

Well in short, AGLOCO, which stands for “A Global Community” (the company uses caps to refer to itself, despite its lowercase logo) could be a big AllAdvantage sheep in wolf’s clothing. (AllAdvantage was a similar kind of internet enterprise started in 1999.)

First, the similarities between the two:

The AGLOCO team includes some of the same leaders of AllAdvantage.

The model is pretty much the same, too: As with AllAdvantage, the user of AGLOCO signs up with the site, and volunteers detailed personal information, including name, email address, age, city, state, country and postal code. AGLOCO promises it won’t be transferred to a third party.

The user agrees to surrender information about their traffic patterns to the site.

Like AllAdvantage, AGLOCO offers a Viewbar, a browser-based bar at the bottom of your screen. The Viewbar displays targeted advertisements based on on content you’re viewing and your traffic patterns.

Moreover, the user gets shares in the company for surfing the Web, and for referring others — and benefits go up the more that referee uses the Internet. The referral network goes five levels deep. This applies for any users, not just early adopters, and so the company argues this is not a “pyramid scheme.”

This targeting aspect is where AGLOCO’s latest incarnation could prove more powerful than last time (which, we note, was significant; people forget that AllAdvantage ranked among the top twenty Web sites, according to Nielsen/Netratings; it had ten million members). Better targeting technology exists today, and affiliate models are more established. Take a hypothetical example: You’re about to buy a book at Barnes & Nobles. AGLOCO will flash a note that you can get a better price at Amazon.com. That’s because AGLOCO has signed an affiliate relationship with Amazon, giving AGLOC an 8.5 percent discount on purchases. Since you’re a member, AGLOCO will pass on say, at 4.25 percentage points of that discount to you.

You win in another way, too: The other 4.25 percentage points AGLOCO keeps for itself accrues to its bottom line. Since you own AGLOCO stock, you benefit. AGLOCO wants to give its members 100 percent ownership. It is not raising any venture capital like last time. It will take ten percent of the company’s revenue for a management fee. This is worth it, says Jim Jorgensen, one of AGLOCO’s founding team, because the 10% management fee will attract the talent needed to make AGLOCO great. (The corresponding 10% of AGLOCO's shares go to a foundation dedicated to providing every human being on Earth with Internet access.). He says a group of aggressive Stanford business school graduates are negotiating deals with Amazon and other partners on your behalf.

This AGLOCO team is intriguing. Eight Stanford MBAs have joined, which is unprecedented. Many Stanford MBAs join companies before they graduate, but not a grouping this big, and especially not at a time when VCs and other companies are poaching MBAs more than they have in the past. They’re bringing fresh, eager blood to their wise but chastened forefathers who launched AllAdvantage. Jorgensen was co-founder and chief executive of AllAdvantage and is one of 15 in AGLOCO’s founding team (a formal chief executive hasn’t been appointed yet, and the group is acting like a commune, refusing to appoint a leader, or even hand out “co-founder” titles). AGLOCO has named Ray Everett-Church its chief privacy officer, the same guy who was CPO at AllAdvantage (AllAdvantage was the first company to have a CPO).

But the guys who first conceived of AGLOCO are Carl Anderson, an AllAdvantage co-founder and now a hedge-fund manager, and Dave Pidwell, a venture partner at Alloy Partners and an early investor of AllAdvantage. Both have given seed funding to AGLOCO. Anderson posted a notice at the Stanford business school’s career center, saying he was looking for someone to start a company. MBA student Akshay Mavani responded, and helped recruit the others. Other seed investors include 4Info chief executive, Zaw Thet and several others.

Anderson and Pidwell also recruited Jorgensen, a tall slender gregarious character who is always quick with a good story. Have him tell you the one about the pre-IPO April 2000 extravaganza bash at his 5,000 square foot home on the Stanford campus. A few days later, in mid-April, the stock market began its free-fall, and AllAdvantage never recovered.

Even so, AGLOCO will be different in key ways, Jorgensen says. Even though AllAdvantage was at the “forefront of privacy,” Jorgensen explains, “we had no idea what we were doing.” This time, AGLOCO is more conservative, making no promises on cash payment levels. AllAdvantage paid out over $100 million to its members; a few members were earning $10,000 to $15,000 a month.

For now, AGLOCO simply says it will give members a share of profits. While AllAdvantage hired 250 engineers, AGLOCO is streamlined. It is built on open source software, with developers in China — and AGLOCO will be launching with a Chinese version of the site too. The funky management structure may become a problem, because there’s no single leader taking overall responsibility.

If it’s anything like its predecessor, though, AGLOCO will be a company to watch.

Is this a scam or fraud?

No. The members of the development team include people with vast high-profile experience in business. Two of the best-known are Jim Jorgensen and Ray Everett-Church. A Google search with keyword “agloco” now brings up more than a million pages. As of early March, 2007, AGLOCO has over 300,000 members already; the goal is 10 million by July 2007.

Is the AGLOCO referral system a pyramid scheme?

No. Pyramid schemes involves members selling products to new members that they recruit. AGLOCO is basically the opposite. No member ever pays AGLOCO. Instead, AGLOCO gets money from companies (like advertisers, search companies and online merchants) and distributes cash and shares to it members.

How do we know AGLOCO will work?

This is actually not a new idea. It worked last time around, when a company called AllAdvantage used the same system and paid out over $120 million dollars to its members between 1999 and 2001 (read more here). You can still find sites online by people who made good money with the company. The only reason AllAdvantage didn’t continue was because of the failure of the dot-com market, and with it Internet advertising. Today the Internet is much more stable and advertising spending is at record levels, with calls on all sides for more relevant, less annoying advertising. AGLOCO’s small but useful Viewbar will satisfy that need.

What’s the catch?

As of the writing of this flyer, the Viewbar isn’t ready yet. It should be available for download in April. This is; (1) to make sure the Viewbar has no bugs in it and (2) to give enough time for people to join so that AGLOCO already has a large network when the Viewbar is out. Companies are more likely to invest if 10 million people have the Viewbar, rather than 10,000.

Will the Viewbar violate privacy or put spyware on your computer?

No. All the Viewbar does is scan the pages you view for keywords that it uses to show you relevant ads that you are more likely to find useful. Nothing else is installed. In addition, AGLOCO has a thorough privacy policy backed by Ray Everett-Church, the leading Internet privacy expert today.

Do members have to do anything besides sign up for free?

Are there rules or restrictions?

There are some rules, and all are intended for the benefit of AGLOCO™ members:

Sign Up Only Once: Each person can only sign up once, creating an account for him or herself, and may not establish an account on behalf of anyone else. Accounts cannot be transferred between people, and each account must be for a physical person.

No spamming: AGLOCO™ strictly forbids spamming to get referrals. This means you can only tell people you know or who explicitly agree to receive your invitation to be referred. If you use spam to try to get referrals, your account will be terminated. For more information, see our Anti-Spam Policy

Number of Internet Hours: The maximum number of payable hours per month is currently 5. Over time, depending on several variables that number may change at AGLOCO™ ’s discretion. The reason we implemented this limit is to prevent hacking software from continuously clicking and thereby generating online search. Remember you can still increase your profits by referring more people to AGLOCO™.

Active Surfing: You have to actively surf to earn cash for your online usage. Just keeping a website up does not constitute active surfing. If you use a software piracy device that constantly clicks through websites, AGLOCO™ ’s anti-hacking instruments will detect and – after investigation – disconnect your account.
In addition, you have to be an active online Member in order to get the benefit of your referrals' surfing. If you surf only 50% of the maximum payable hours a month, and your referrals each surf 100%, you will be credited with only 50% of the payable surfing time for each referral. Why can’t I download the viewbar now?

The Viewbar software is currently in closed beta testing (no one is accumulating hours with the beta software). After thorough testing and necessary improvements, it will be released to AGLOCO™ Members on a first come first serve basis (according to the date you signed up to be an AGLOCO™ Member). We are currently allowing our Members full access to the site to build their referral networks. The sooner you sign up, the earlier you will be able to download the Viewbar and start accumulating online hours!

Will it be free to download the viewbar?

Yes, it is completely free to download the viewbar. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, the download time may vary from a few to several minutes.

Do I need to have the Viewbar up all the time?

No! Currently AGLOCO™ will reward up to five hours a month in Viewbar time. Above that limit, you can keep your Viewbar displayed or minimize it at any time, though most of the Members choose to keep it up. If you don’t want your Viewbar to operate at any specific time, just minimize it and it will stop working. However, you will not earn online hours while your Viewbar is minimized.

Will I be able to minimize the viewbar?

Yes! You can minimize the Viewbar any time and it will stop working. However, you will not accumulate any online hours while the Viewbar is minimized.

Can I use more than one computer?

You can install the Viewbar™software on multiple computers and get credit for your surfing regardless of which machine you use. However, you cannot use the Viewbar™ on more than one machine simultaneously. Just download and install the Viewbar™ software on each machine you use to surf the Web.

How do I change my email address?

You can go to the profile section and change your email address. Don't forget to click on "Save" to upload your profile.

What if I want to quit?

There are no obligations to maintain your Membership, you may quit at any time. If you cancel your account, you forfeit any balance accumulated below the minimum payout level. You also forfeit your referral network, although your referrals remain members. Of course, you can rejoin whenever you want but you will start out without any balance or referrals. Search: Every time you use the Viewbar™ to do an Internet search, AGLOCO earns money from the search engine providers. (For example, Google pays as much as $0.10 on average for each search that is directed to its search engine.)

Advertising: The Viewbar™ itself displays ads that are targeted based upon the websites you’re visiting. When you click on an ad and make a purchase, AGLOCO receives a referral fee, which we pass on to our Members. (Please note: Individual members do not receive any compensation for clicking on ads in the Viewbar™, and the Viewbar™ can detect if someone is clicking ads in a fraudulent manner.)

Transaction commissions: Many major retailers pay commissions when you refer customers who make a purchase. AGLOCO collects that commission and passes it on to our members. (For example, Amazon pays an 8.5% commission to most websites who refer customers, and has cut deals for even larger percentages. The bigger the AGLOCO community, the better commission we can negotiate for our Members.)

Software distribution: Numerous software companies pay websites to encourage the download of new software releases (for example, Adobe’s Flash and Acrobat Reader software), and trial versions of new programs. AGLOCO members not only get access to the latest and coolest software, they get paid for it.

Service distribution: Many online service providers will look to the AGLOCO community as a source of new and active users for their services. (For example, eBay, Skype, and PayPal, among others, all pay fees to people who help them recruit new active users to their services)

Product distribution: When Members agree to use a product, such as cell phones, high-tech gadgets, office supplies, new credit cards or financial services, AGLOCO can collect referral fees. Some companies even offer special rebate and cash-back programs.

"AGLOCO Members make money in four ways."

Members earn a monthly share of the AGLOCO revenue based on the use of the AGLOCO Viewbar™ that month.
Members earn part of the company based on the use of the AGLOCO Viewbar™ that month (currently a maximum of five hours are rewarded).

Too Good To Be True?

Isn’t getting something for nothing impossible. How can ALOCO succeed?

QUESTION: “We have some concerns about AGLOCO. Though we want this to work, it seems too good to be true. We can recruit people into joining Agloco, as its free. But this is the thing that concerns us. Its hard to believe that members are going to be paid without ‘investing’ or putting something into it.”

AGLOCO management’s answer:

“If being “too good” is our only problem, I think we’re in great shape!

Joking aside, seeming “too good to be true” is probably the number one reason people DON’T sign up for AGLOCO. It seems strange to “get something for nothing.”

The truth is, you’re not getting something for nothing. You’re giving the Viewbar a small share of your computer monitor, which we (and apparently many advertisers) consider extremely valuable. You are also choosing us as your partner for commissions, referrals, and fees accumulated through everyday browsing. So, instead of some other middleman making this money, AGLOCO makes it. We win, you win, and the advertisers/companies win for getting your business.

Also, if you decide to refer other Members and build the community, you get more because YOU have built the community and provided it with its most valuable resource: more Members. By providing value to AGLOCO, we provide value back to you for your efforts.

So, essentially, AGLOCO doesn’t cost you any money to join, but you are “putting something in it” to reap the returns AGLOCO will provide you. If it’s worth it to share about 3/4-inch of your screen with the Viewbar, and possibly to take the time and effort to build our network, you have earned every cent of your AGLOCO payout.

Having a Viewbar on your screen while you are actively browsing the Internet offers benefits to AGLOCO, advertisers, and Internet companies. Another reason you get paid is because having an active Viewbar on your screen means that you are asking AGLOCO to be your commission partner. Many things you do on the internet make money for middlemen without you realizing it. AGLOCO never requires Members to do any of these things, but activities such as joining communities (such as eBay and MySpace), searching (such as on Yahoo and Google), downloading free software (such as Adobe Acrobat), and making purchases (such as on Orbitz and Amazon.com), will in many cases generate money for a middleman. By having an active Viewbar on your desktop, you designate AGLOCO to be your middleman. This makes AGLOCO money and, in return for that, AGLOCO pays you back. So, in that way, having an active Viewbar on your screen makes you money for doing what you would ordinarily do.

Value Proposition 2: You build the network, we pay you more.

Why does AGLOCO use a referral system?

“The most valuable part of AGLOCO is its Members. By referring others to AGLOCO, you provide them with value and for that, AGLOCO thinks you should get back some of that value you provide.

It makes sense. Think about YouTube. The first, most active users were on the site when the software was buggy and there were few videos available, but their Membership (and referrals to others) is what made the site a success. Why should average people join ALOCO?

The management answers:

"So, if a Member just wants to be a Member and not recruit new Members (and frankly, 80% to 90% will not), what incentive is there for them to join AGLOCO?

I believe the answer is that AGLOCO’s Membership benefits need to far outweigh any costs.

The key benefits a regular Member will get for Free are these: a modest but steady financial payout, and a functional toolbar that will be useful while browsing the Internet.

Compared to what a Member with 2,000 referrals will get if AGLOCO succeeds, this may not seem like much. Still, some financial payout is ‘infinitely’ more than these Members get with a Google or Yahoo toolbar, and over time the Viewbar and the AGLOCO website will become a community building forum with some very useful functionally.

Since AGLOCO Membership and Viewbar software is free, is there any other cost for membership?

Signing up takes less than two minutes, the Viewbar download is a simple one-time install process (updates will be processed automatically … more on that later), the Viewbar uses a small section of space at the bottom of the screen, and the current limit of 5 hours of browsing each month is accrued passively while the Viewbar is active on the desktop. AGLOCO only has once a month Member update emails, so overall the ‘cost’ of AGLOCO has been kept very low.

Are there risks? AGLOCO could fail and this small effort could be wasted. But Member privacy is absolutely secure, and there is little else the Member is putting out there to be ‘risked’. Thus, I’d have to say that the risk is small.
